The Rwandan genocide was the systematic extermination of over eight hundred thousand Tutsi, an ethnic group in Rwanda, by the Hutu, another ethnic group in Rwanda. In this essay I will briefly describe the history of the conflict of the Hutu and Tutsi, the 100 days of genocide in 1994, and the affects of the massacre on the economy and the people of Rwanda.

The Rwandan genocide, also known as the genocide against the Tutsi, was a mass slaughter of Tutsi, Twa, and moderate Hutu in Rwanda, which took place between 7 April and 15 July 1994 during the Rwandan Civil War. In 1990, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), a rebel group composed of Tutsi refugees, invaded northern Rwanda from their base in Uganda, initiating the Rwandan Civil War.

This resulted in the genocide against the Tutsi people. The conflict began when Hutu militia blamed members of the Tutsi tribe for the death of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana in a plane crash on April 6, 1994. Since World War II, this has led to a series of intertribal conflicts between the two groups.

The film Hotel Rwanda is a very touching and at the same time disturbing film. The whole plot of the film revolves around two tribes in Rwanda, the Hutus and the Tutsis, and from there we can see different social and psychological issues that came about as a result of the tension between the two tribes.

On April 6, 1994, Hutus began slaughtering the Tutsis in the African country of Rwanda. As the brutal killings continued, the world stood idly by and just watched the slaughter. Lasting 100 days, the Rwandan Genocide left approximately 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu sympathizers dead.
